The project “Scary thoughts cleared up in him” - is a series of artworks based on Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin’s poem titled the “Bronze Horseman”: it depicts the lines of the poem on canvas, wood, metal. The artist had this project in mind since the end of the1980’s, but because of the the uncertain Perestroika times he decided to put it off until later. Today, 30 years later, the artist felt that similar times have come again: the changes of recent years, wars, demonstrations… To underline the dramatic nature of separate lines from the “Bronze Horseman”, Gutov chooses a visual language of another similar dramatic period from the country’s history: he places the lines written by Pushkin on the covers of constructivist and futuristic books from the beginning of the 20th century. Dmitry Gutov states that: “In the 1920s, avant garde artists had a feeling of anxiety about the times they were living in, they felt that changes were underway: the First World War, the revolution. We can see this in the compositions with letters that they created: rough, expressive. The energy of an immediately materialised idea is concentrated in it.” The artist studied Soviet covers for a long time and on the basis of his visual impressions he experimented with fonts, text positioning, in this way searching for the most expressive compositions. Gutov’s series “Scary thoughts cleared up in him” connects the country’s moods with a red thread starting with the beginning of the 19th century, to the beginning and the end of the 20th century and to our time - the beginning of the 21st century. V
