The name of the painting – «Longitude» – refers to the geographical term of longitude, that is, to the coordinate system for spherical objects. This allows us to treat a work as something having a volume, and not just a visible plane. The round format of the picture is a model of a closed, self-contained universe for Victor Alimpiev. In order not to violate its integrity, the artist writes with special arcuate movements that leave semicircular, barely perceptible tracks, and distributes the paint dashes all over the edge of the canvas – the horizon line of this world. The artist intentionally removes all the signs of the habitual space, with its top and bottom. Alimpiev's picture becomes not just a «window into the world», but the world itself, beyond which there is nothing.
The work «Longitude» is executed in a typical manner for the artist: multi-layered, deep color suspension, on the slightly shimmering surface of which thin lines of «stars» appear. These «stars» – as indications or kisses – mark the space, give it volume and habitability. The painting layers of Alimpiev's paintings are carefully thought out and verified, he precisely works with «temperature gradations» of shades. But it seems that this is a smooth, round form, it was not written by anyone, but it appeared as if by itself. V
