The sculpture “Kranonosov” belongs to the series of works which reinterpret the classical type of satiric heroes, who became one of the archetypal symbols of Russian literature’s “curriculum”, more precisely, the hero of short grotesque stories, for example written by Saltykov-Schedrin, Zoschenko or Dovlatov. The shape of the sculpture ironically refers to the genre of grand portraits. The sculptures of the series have different nose shapes, an important detail which fully determines the character’s type. Casting a trivial manufacturing object from the artist’s workshop became an important detail as Gogol’s nose, around which the character’s personality is built - a modern interpretation of a seriously-joking narration that shows vivid disposition for “literature” in the national culture.
