Artist
Mikhail Shwartsman1926–1997
A non-conformist painter, graphic artist. Referred to the iconographic tradition in his works by working with tempera on levkas in warm subdued tones. In the 70’s-80’s, he invented the metaphysical ‘hierature’ concept, which is governed by geometrical abstraction and anthropomorphous images of faces. The concept is based on the possibility of expressing ideas and shapes through harmonious compositions. Works are in the Tretyakov Gallery, Russian Museum, Hermitage.
