Dmitry Plavinsky 1937–2012
A nonconformist artist. Called his style ‘structural symbolism’: fragmented the world into symbols and combined them together again in paintings, graphics, collages, etchings, objects. Represents artefacts from different cultures: Prehistoric, Greek, Ancient Russian, Contemporary. Creates complex tactile textures using sand, limestone, plaster, fabrics, paper. Ochre colour dominates. Works are in Metropolitan Museum, MoMA.
